The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence.

This year’s Walk will be held Friday, October 21, 2011.

Close to 100 brave walkers took part to Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® in the rain on October 15, 2010. With your support, the organizing committee for the third annual IG Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event in Moncton presented a cheque for $19,000 to the Coalition Against Abuse in Relationships! Thank you to all who joined us to Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® last year – you were all a huge part of our success!

A special thank you goes out to Honorary Chair, Chris Collins, and all of our wonderful sponsors and supporters listed on the right.

We graciously thank you all! Pictured from left are Stephanie LeBlanc, Investors Group (event Title sponsor); Kristal LeBlanc, CAAR; Terrance Trites, FSM & CAAR Past-President; Paulette Levesque, CAAR Executive Director/Co-President; Gabrielle Maillet, CAAR Founder; Amber Richards, Event Chair.

Absent from photo was Julie McCabe, CAAR Co-President; Louise Martin and Julie Mercier-Doucette.

In commemoration of the 2010 Investors Group Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event, sponsors and walkers, the organizing committee has created a 2011 calendar filled with photos from the Walk, special days of interest, statistics on issues of rape, sexual assault and gender violence, and a help card with contact information for those in need. Calendars are 8.5”Wx11”H when fully open and are available for $10 each by calling Stephanie at (506) 875-5003 at the Investors Group office, 1255 Main Street, Moncton.

If you are in a situation with these issues, please don’t hesitate to contact the CAAR Outreach Worker at (506) 855-7222. www.coalitionagainstabuse.com

Inspired by the old saying, “You can’t understand a person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes,” Investors Group is challenging you all to literally walk one mile through downtown Moncton with us in women’s high-heeled shoes on Friday, October 21st at noon. It’s not an easy feat, and let’s be honest, it’s very difficult to talk about gender based violence, but this highly visible event will get the community talking and create much needed awareness.

Walk the Walk

This event is being held to educate the community to take action to prevent rape, sexual assault and gender violence. Proceeds from sponsored walkers in the event will benefit the Coalition Against Abuse in Relationship’s (CAAR) violence prevention efforts, and support services for victims.

For men, this event is a chance to show the women in your life that you understand first hand how difficult it can be to walk in their shoes. For women, we encourage you to register and walk as well, providing moral support, while at the same time helping to raise necessary funds for CAAR! Walk side by side in support of a future without violence.

C.A.A.R. is a non-profit organization representing many service providers (www.coalitionagainstabuse.com) whose members work directly or indirectly with victims and/or perpetrators of violence in relationships. Created in 1990, it attempts to improve awareness of and access to services to the victims and/or perpetrators of abuse through public education and lobbying activities.

At least one woman dies every week in Canada at the hands of a current or former spouse.  Since 1974, close to 90 New Brunswick women, plus a few related victims (children, mother or friend) have been killed by the women’s current or ex-partner.   The sentences handed out in these cases were atrocious! Silhouettes from the NB Silent Witness project will be on display during the event (www.silentwitness.ca).

NOTE:  The Investors Group Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Committee has joined forces with the Elsipogtog Violence & Abuse Prevention Committee to hold a concurrent Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event at the Elsipogtog Health Centre Healing Lodge.  For more information about the Elsipogtog event, please contact Rhonda Flewelling at (506) 523-4747, (506) 523-8222, or rhonda.flewelling@ehwc.ca.
