Walk A Mile In Her Shoes

The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence.

This year’s Walk will be held Friday, October 18, 2013.

Over 100 brave walkers took part to Walk a Mile in Her Shoes on October 12, 2012. With their support, the organizing committee for the fifth annual IG Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event in Moncton presented a cheque for $11,500 to the Coalition Against Abuse in Relationships Inc.(CAAR)! Thank you to all who joined us to Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® last year – you were all a huge part of our success!

A special thank you goes out to all of the volunteers; Honorary Chair, S/Sgt. Jean Marc Collin; our Title sponsor, Investors Group; Gold sponsor Moncton Chrysler Jeep Dodge; Silver sponsors, Champlain Place, and the City of Moncton; Bronze sponsors, Second Cup, Town of Riverview, and Lawn Rangers Landscaping and all of our wonderful sponsors and supporters listed on the right.

Pictured from left (standing) are Angela Arsenault, CAAR; Amber Richards, Event Chair; Stephanie Warman, Investors Group (event Title sponsor); Kristal LeBlanc, CAAR; Paulette Levesque, CAAR President; and Kristen Barnes, CAAR. Pictured from left (seated) are Suzanne Bibeau, CAAR; Gabrielle Maillet, CAAR Founder; and Melissa Baxter, CAAR.

Absent from photo were Julie McCabe, Terrance Trites, Janice Tilley, Flora Ryder, Joanne Boucher, and Angela Gates – all CAAR Board members.

This year’s Walk will be held Friday, October 18, 2013. Please register with the form on the right by September 6th.

CAAR would like to remind all non-profit organizations who are involved in stopping rape, sexual assault and gender violence to apply for financial support from the WaMiHS Community Action Fund.

Inspired by the old saying, “You can’t understand a person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes,” Investors Group is challenging you all to literally walk one mile through downtown Moncton with us in women’s high-heeled shoes on Friday, October 12th at noon. It’s not an easy feat, and let’s be honest, it’s very difficult to talk about gender based violence, but this highly visible event will get the community talking and create much needed awareness.

Walk the Walk

This event is being held to educate the community to take action to prevent rape, sexual assault and gender violence. New this year, proceeds from sponsored walkers in the event will benefit YWCA Moncton’s violence prevention efforts, and support services for women and their families.

For men, this event is a chance to show the women in your life that you understand first hand how difficult it can be to walk in their shoes. For women, we encourage you to register and walk as well, providing moral support, while at the same time helping to raise necessary funds for the YWCA! Walk side by side in support of a future without violence.

Since 1920, YWCA Moncton has proudly partnered with the community in addressing the needs of women and their families. The YWCA offers a variety of programs and services to support, empower and inspire women, including youth programs, personal safety courses, financial literacy and life skills training, housing initiatives and family law clinics. YWCA Moncton promotes independence, wellness and equity for all.

At least one woman dies every week in Canada at the hands of a current or former spouse. Since 1974, close to 90 New Brunswick women, plus a few related victims (children, mother or friend) have been killed by the women’s current or ex-partner. The sentences handed out in these cases were atrocious! Silhouettes from the NB Silent Witness project will be on display during the event (www.silentwitness.ca).

NOTE: The Investors Group Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Committee has joined forces with the Elsipogtog Violence & Abuse Prevention Committee to hold a concurrent Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event at the Elsipogtog Health Centre Healing Lodge.
